Le Pin National Stud Farm, nicknamed “the Versailles of the horse world”, was built during the reign of Louis XIV to house the royal stallions. Today it is one of the jewels in the crown of French equestrian heritage.
Le Pin National Stud Farm is now launching a call for proposals from economic stakeholders as part of their MAJOR PROJECT for cultural, economic and tourism development of the site. The development strategy relies on a diversification of the services associated with Le Pin Stud Farm, including accommodation, catering and expanding the range of activities and associated facilities available.
As part of the Equidays event, you will have the opportunity to visit the Normandie Equine Vallée site and the work being carried out on its extensive equine campus on Thursday 28 October 2021.
The aim of Normandie Equine Vallée is to create an attractive, internationally oriented and multi-stakeholder equine campus at Goustranville, creating synergies between research, education and training and the economic stakeholders in the equine sector.
The Goustranville campus was founded in 1986 and already hosts: the animal health laboratory of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Labour Security (Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et du travail – ANSES); the medical imaging and research centre for equine locomotor conditions (Cirale); Kinésia, a facility dedicated to horse physiotherapy and rehabilitation; the EnvA laboratory; and the horseracing laboratory (particularly for carrying out anti-doping tests on racehorses) of the French National Horseracing Federation (Fédération Nationale des Courses Hippiques – FNCH).
The development project for the campus also includes the integration of new structures in the fields of education, training and health, specifically: the Normandy training centre of the Blondeau school; EnvA (National Veterinary School) equine health training and research activities; representatives (associations and competitivity hub) as well as businesses involved in the sector with the aim of reinforcing links between students, researchers and economic stakeholders.
Several competitors from Normandy have been selected as part of the French Olympic team, including male and female riders as well as several horses.

The Medical Imaging and Research Centre for Equine Locomotor Conditions (Cirale), Normandy equine hub of the Alfort National Veterinary School (EnvA), is continuing its expansion in There was an all-Normandy top 5 in the Prix d’Amérique 2021, with the Normandy-bred trotter FACE TIME Bourbon winning the race on Sunday 31 January 2021. And even better than that the four other horses making up the top 5 in the world trotting championship were from Normandy too: 2nd 15 DAVIDSON DU PONT J.-M. BAZIRE; 3rd 4 GU D’HERIPRE F. NIVARD; 4th 13 DELIA DU POMMEREUX E. RAFFIN; 5th 16 BAHIA QUESNOT J. GUELPA.
ThIn 2020, the French economy fell into a huge recession, with its GDP falling by around 8%. The equine sector, like many other sectors of the national economy, was very badly affected by the covid crisis. The pandemic forced people to change their social behaviour (social distancing, lockdowns, curfews). The government asked the IFCE (French Equine and Equestrian Institute) to coordinate an analysis of the effects of the ongoing pandemic on the equine sector. The Sector Committee that represents the great diversity of this sector produced a summary and a progress report.
The Myeloencephalitis – EHV1 (rhinopneumonitis) epidemic has been subject to careful monitoring since the beginning of the health crisis, in partnership with the Equine Pathology Epidemiology Surveillance Network (Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologies Equines – RESPE).
Given that the has developed in a positive direction, the FFE and the SHF have jointly decided to confirm the restart of all national and international equestrian competitions, equine meetings and training courses they are organising or that take place under their auspices, from Monday 12 April 2021.
In order to maintain a high level of vigilance, a health protocol will be applied to all involved in the competition and this will be set out as soon as the rules decided upon by the international federation are released. Vaccination and boosters against this disease are still recommended for any horses that may be exposed to it.
The regional news broadcast produced a special edition focusing on the equestrian sector in Normandy, specifically looking at horse welfare and the future of the sector.
The subject is addressed via two questions: “How is the equine sector in Normandy doing?”. This featured an interview with Pascal Frotiée, manager of the only stables using an active stabling system in Normandy, Les Ecuries de Lisors. The report presents the active stabling system under which horses are able to live in semi-freedom and the benefits horses gain from living outside of their stalls. Subsequently there is an appearance from Claire Neveux, the founder of Ethonova and horse welfare research engineer, who talks about “What will the equine sector look like in the future?” alongside Laurence Meunier, chair of Pôle Hippolia and the Normandy Horse Council. This section focuses on how horse welfare is being taken into consideration to an ever-increasing extent.

The Normandy Trotting Fair has become one of the essential events in the equine sector in Normandy. With conditions around the current pandemic making it impossible to hold the event at the equine hub in Saint-Lô, the Normandy Horse Council decided to ensure that the event could take place in February 2021. In partnership with and thanks to support from trotting professionals, we launched the event as a unique, 100% digital experience!
Simplicity and effectiveness were the key values behind the creation of this digital trade fair. A specially designed website was provided, meaning that the stud farmers and stallholders were only a few clicks away, allowing visitors to look at the catalogue of more than 100 stallions and take part in the draw for insemination.

This year, the publication features a number of new destinations. Each of them offers a variety of features to explore and unforgettable experiences both for people with experience as well as novices. A must read!
Founded in 2006 as a Normandy House Council initiative, the équi-projets network provides assistance with the creation and development of equine businesses in Normandy. This network facilitates the various procedures by pooling the skills and services of équi-projets partners.
This year, a new strand has been added to complete this initiative: “Saddle up for business creation”. This is an innovative concept whose aim is to provide assistance and support to young people setting up businesses via a three-year course so that they are well prepared to run their future enterprises.
Animal welfare and protecting the environment are currently central concerns both in terms of regulations and society as a whole. With this in mind, the EquuRES label provides the equine sector with a tool to monitor environmental standards and animal welfare in order to help organisations and companies to make any necessary changes.
The EquuRES label is the only national initiative for environmental quality and equine welfare that has been specifically developed for organisations and businesses in the equine sector. It concerns French equine organisations of all sizes and across all types of activity.
This year, the label has been divided into three sectors so that evaluations of organisations can be adapted as appropriately as possible: EquuRES Event, EquuRES Racecourse and EquuRES equine businesses.
